The Research Capability-Building Program of SSRC
The program seeks to develop the research skills of junior faculty in the Social Science Departments of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) by providing them with material and technical support through every steps of the research process. One interested faculty from each of the Social Sciences (and Humanities) will be accepted to the program which will run for one academic year. For ease in administration and for purposes of encouraging inter-disciplinarity (whenever possible), only one research site will be chosen as the study area. This approach also proceeds from the assumption that neophyte researchers will need to closely interact with one another to share notes and observations and to build up confidence in dealing with research participants and the unexpected conditions that may arise in the course of fieldwork.
Thus far, two rounds of studies have been completed and a third is scheduled to start in the second semester of school year 2006-2007 (see Danajon and Urban Studies).
To ensure focus and continuity, faculty-participants will be given release time (deloading) of as much as nine (9) academic units each semester and full deloading during the summer term to allow for uninterrupted fieldwork. Cash allowances (transportation and per diem) and access to research materials and equipment are also provided.
Technical support comes in the form of training inputs which are determined and designed according to the needs of the faculty’s disciplines. These are handled by senior faculty who have an established and solid track record in research (See Training Programs).
Towards the end of the program, faculty-participants are required to present their studies in an academic forum organized by the SSRC, after which the research drafts will be finalized and re-written for publication.
The program, depending on availability of funds, is expected to run for five (5) academic years. By then, it is assumed, that the Social Science departments faculty-researchers that would allow each department to carry out its own research agenda with confidence.
